Walking Aids

Elderly patients often need some support when

  • Walking indoors or outdoors
  • Getting in or out of chair or bed.
  • Walking up and down the stairs

It is normal for balance and gait to deteriorate with age. This is why choosing the right piece of equipment is essential.

It can make your life so much easier! What is even more important it can protect you from falls, injuries, unnecessary admission to hospital and operation.

There are numerous pieces of equipment and we can help you choose the best one for you.

To aid walking patients frequently use:

  • Walking stick –  Usually it is best for patients with minimal mobility and balance problems. It is a confidence booster for many patients who take it for longer walks and use it outdoors.
  • Walking frame (Zimmer frame) – by far this is the most common walking aid patients use; gives sufficient stability and protect you from falling. University of Salford published safety information to users of walking frames. You can access it here.
  • Gutter Frame – similar to Zimmer frame; patients do not have to use their hands to push the frame but lean on the frame with their forearms.
  • Rollator – rollator allows for faster walking, it is better for patients with adequate balance and gait.
